Iration celebrates release of new EP at House of Blues Anaheim

Written by Chris Johnson    Thursday, 28 April 2011 04:46

Iration, the reggae-rock group from Santa Barbara, CA having recently released their new EP Fresh Grounds is making their rounds, and we had a chance to catch up with them at the House of Blues in Anaheim. The House of Blues was sold out, this being their second sold out show at House of Blues Anaheim in just 12 months. We sadly weren’t able to send a reporter to the event this time, but here are some pictures for your enjoyment.

However we aren’t going to go out like that, you can read our review of the Fresh Grounds EP, Read about them at the US Open of Surf last year, or check out a review from the last time they were at the House of Blues in Anaheim.

Sorry Iration, we will try to stop stalking you… NOT!

Till next time...

Iration headlines two shows at SLO Brew this weekend « Mustang Daily – News for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

Some bands come through San Luis Obispo, play one show and are on a tour bus to the next venue within hours. But reggae band Iration, who are winding down a two-month tour, is taking its time and playing two shows at SLO Brewing Co. tonight and tomorrow.

Iration bassist Adam Taylor said finishing the tour here made sense for the band. "We wanted to end the tour with SLO because it's a place we all love, and we wanted to make it special," he said. Courtesy photo.

But why?

Bassist Adam Taylor said Iration loves playing here, and the band thought it was a perfect place to end a long run of shows.

“It’s a market that’s kind of grown with us as we’ve grown as a band,” Taylor said. “Since it’s so close to us, we wanted to end the tour with SLO because it’s a place that we all love, and we wanted to make it special. So we decided to do two shows. It’s a good place to end — a coming home show.”

The tour, which the band spent half with Rebelution and the other half of as headliners, has taken Iration across the U.S.

“The last two shows with Rebelution were awesome — we did two at House of Blues in Chicago,” Taylor said. “Memorable things have just been jamming with other musicians on this tour. I’d say that’s been the most fun for us.”

The lifelong friends formed the band in Santa Barbara while members were attending college around the area. What started in 2001 as two guitarists and a set of drums grew to include a bassist in Taylor by 2002.

By 2008, the band was complete with keyboardist Cayson Peterson, drummer Joe Dickens, vocal and percussionist Kai Rediske, Taylor, guitarist and vocalist Micah Pueschel and dub controller Joe King.

The Hawaiian natives released their first album “No Time for Rest” in 2007, and have been climbing the charts ever since, with hits such as “Cookie Jar” and “Falling.” With the release of its album “Time Bomb” a year ago reaching No. 2 on Billboard’s reggae album charts and several other tracks peaking on iTunes and Billboard lists, Iration has been building up quite the momentum.

The momentum isn’t running out, either. Their most recent EP “Fresh Grounds,” released in February, already experienced some success with the track “Summer Nights” reaching No. 2 on the iTunes reggae singles chart.

Taylor said the group’s goal has always been to do well on the music charts.

“It’s a surprise, but it’s something we’ve been working toward our entire career,” Taylor said.

He also said their success is reflected in other ways.

“It’s translating with the crowds, and we’re able to play bigger shows,” Taylor said. “We feel really blessed and thankful that we’re able to experience this success.”

Fans have been noticing the band’s rise in popularity as well. Mathematics sophomore Mike Ion said he’s seen Iration play with other reggae bands before, and has noticed an increase in its fan base.

“Their popularity has been increasing so much,” Ion said. “I saw them in Hawaii when they opened for Pepper, and there were 20 people there. Now their shows (are) almost sold out. I think they’re starting to appeal to a wider audience. The more they play, the popularity spreads to a lot more people.”

Taylor said the band is indeed trying to appeal to a larger audience, most apparently with the release of “Fresh Grounds.” The band wanted to experiment with more musical styles.

“It has a wide array of music — we’ve never used acoustic guitar,” Taylor said. “We want to remain unique but stick to the fundamentals of reggae, so we’re experimenting with different styles within that genre. It’s cool to go out of our comfort zone.”

And so far, audiences have received the new sounds with open ears. One track “No Letter,” which is an acoustic song, has been a hit among crowds so far, Taylor said.

Civil engineering freshman Alan Blevins said the fact that Iration experiments with sounds within reggae is what distinguishes them from other reggae bands.

“They have so many different sounds,” Blevins said. “They have the rock sound sometimes, sometimes the Bob Marley reggae sound. Just the variety is what makes them unique. I really like all the songs on the new album. They went all out on this one.”

So why does the Iration sound resonate so well with San Luis Obispo — enough to support two shows? Ion said it comes from the sheer enjoyment of reggae music.

“Reggae is the type of music that a lot of people enjoy — it’s not too loud and over the top,” Ion said. “It’s just feel good music. So no matter what genre is your favorite, everyone seems to like their stuff.”

Sanderson attributes it to the crowd connection.

“Iration has always been a SLO staple,” Sanderson said. “They performed earlier in the year and at UU hour and they had a huge crowd. We’ve always given them our support and I don’t think it’ll stop.”

Tickets for both all-ages shows are available in advance for $18 at BooBoo Records or at ticketweb.com, and are $20 at the door. Doors for tonight’s show open at 8 p.m., and at 6:30 p.m. for tomorrow’s show.

FreshGrounds

Catchy and soulfully harmonic vocals curl around swells of distorted and aggressive guitar riffs, bumping basslines, kinky keys and crashtastic drums in Fresh Grounds, the new EP from Hawaiian native rockers Iration.

The five tracks included on the EP create an island-flavored wave-riding aural experience that flows on layers of acoustic melodies, synthesized sound effects and percussion mixes. “All This Time” is a highlight with its raging guitar licks, drum jams and expressive lyrics about fulfilling desires; “No Letter” is a swaying, passionate acoustic number about the end of a relationship; and the closing track, “Summer Nights,” creates a night-air sonic atmosphere with its groovin’ tropical riddim and sweet-sounding vocals: “It’s just one of those days, no it’s not a phase, it’s all mentality / At the liquor store pickin’ up supplies, Party all night, waitin’ for the sunrise / And when the world stops catchin’ up to me, I take one breath and smile because the mood is right, thinkin’ bout those summer nights…”

The EP is a welcome addition to the breezy and chillaxed discography of Iration, which makes it a quintessential soundtrack for the sunshine and beaches of Florida life. Iration’s island pulse is perfect for barbecues, bonfires and, especially, those days spent lying on the beach that somehow or another turn into playful nights. With Fresh Grounds, the Hawaiian musicians prove they’re a dynamic group on the forefront of the constantly expanding reggae-rock/made-for-the-beach music scene.

Fresh Grounds EP by Iration

I recently got to catch up with Iration’s bassist Adam Taylor, who took a few minutes before a Virginia performance to chat with me by phone about the band’s rising success and their genuine enthusiasm about playing Florida. Check it out below.

CL: What was the overall intention of the Fresh Grounds EP and what does it say about where the band is musically, at this point?

Adam Taylor: One of the goals with Fresh Grounds was to showcase our musical range and our variety a bit more. Typically, our other releases tended to have a more traditional reggae-rock sound and with Fresh Grounds we did sample different styles. For example, this is the first time we’ve ever used acoustic guitars in songs that we’ve produced as well as some really rockin’ guitars and synthesizers and stuff.

What it says about us musically, at this point, is we don’t just want to be known as a reggae band, but we want to go into mainstream and break into and incorporate other genres as well. We all have a lot of different influences, so the one thing we really don’t want to do is be typecast as just another reggae-rock band. Also, with all the song writing that Micah [vocals/guitar] and Kai [vocals/percussion] do, there are a lot of pop sensibilities. Right now, the writing style goal for us is to always be listener friendly and to offer something lyrically the listener can identify with, no matter what musical style we are playing with.

IrationBallyhooF20DownThe last time you guys were in Tampa, it was in 2010 supporting The Expendables, and you’ve done some headlining since then, but mostly you’ve supported a lot of other great musicians. How does it feel to get to be rolling solo, supporting your own EP? I know the Fresh Grounds tour just started, but how’s it going, how are fans responding to the new tunes in the live setting?

It feels really good! We’re from Hawaii, so we had a lot of success on iTunes and stuff, but we didn’t have the touring availability, ya know, because we were from a small island. We’ve done a lot of support-touring of bigger bands, which has really helped us a lot, but being able to go back to Tampa as the headliner, supporting our own music and playing new songs off the EP feels really good, and we couldn’t be more excited to get to headline in Tampa.

So far with the tour, we’ve already had tons of really good sold out and packed shows. One really cool thing is the EP just came out and already the fans know the words, they love the songs and they’re requesting the new tracks. And that’s really a testament to the Internet. Fans have been able to access the music, maybe even before the EP came out.

While on a winter tour, how do you guys keep it Hawaii while on the road and what do you miss most about Hawaii when touring?

Well, the first part is an easy question, ya know, we don’t even have to try to keep things Hawaii because it is so embedded in our nature and is so innate in us that it just comes through naturally in everything we do. But, coming through the snow and cold, it’s easy to miss home, and I really can say on behalf of the whole band, we really enjoy playing in Florida. Other than California, Florida is the closest we come to the vibe we get when we play at home in Hawaii, so we’re really stoked to come down and jam all the new songs for everybody.

I’ve yet to see you guys perform, but word on the street is Iration puts on a great live show. What makes Iration a band people should want to go check out live?

For us, the most important thing is to bring good energy and give a really positive vibe while we’re on stage. Also, we really love the energy we get from the crowd and whenever we come to Florida, especially, they show so much love that it’s really easy to perform. Playing live, especially for fans like that, makes it so easy as a musician — they give us energy and we just give it right back.

Iration – Fresh Grounds

Review by Michael Cotton

EPs are difficult for fans to embrace, they are obviously not quite an album and you can often be left wanting more or perhaps wondering if the tracks thrown together are simply songs which didn’t quite make the cut for a full album.

With Iration this has never been the case, you get the sense they see value in EPs and view them as a way to connect with fans and also to experiment slightly with their sound.

Fresh Grounds, the new EP by Iration is the band’s third such offering, and it opens with the track Can’t Wait.iration-1

You are immediately hit with a heavier sound than we are used to hearing from Iration, the guitar is at the fore throughout the track but, as with many Iration songs, it’s the vocals which make this track work. The smoothness of Micah’s voice is what makes Iration stand out from the crowded reggae-rock scene.

All this Time starts in a similar fashion to Can’t Wait – it roars through the opening 30 seconds or so before mellowing out.

Summer Nights is the type of song which we have come to expect from Iration, a song which retains the pop sensibilities of the group. A tune which whisks you away to a faraway beach where a group of friends are just chilling as the sun goes down, the bonfire is lit and the beers are being passed around.

Parts of Fresh Grounds hint at a slightly heavier, rougher approach from Iration but the standout tracks are the ones which retain the chill pop-reggae sound.

Overall, the Hawaii boys, now residing in Santa Barbra, continue to impress on their musical journey with another admirable release.

The Pier Album Rating:

Release Date: Feb 1st, 2011
Record Label: Law/3 Prong Records

Artist Background:
It took one EP and one full length album for the Hawaii-natives Iration to hit the top of the reggae charts. With the debut of their second EP Sample This in October 2008, Iration had hit as high as the #3 top-selling reggae album on iTunes. It didn’t take long to gain international attention with hits such as Falling and Wait & See. Also in 2008, they embarked on their first nationwide tour supporting fellow Hawaiians, Pepper. Iration’s second full-length album Time Bomb, released in March of 2010, currently holds the fifteenth top-selling album on iTunes. Now headlining tours across the United States, fans have anxiously waited for their next project: Fresh Grounds EP, which was released on February 1, 2011.

Album Review:
In the midst of the dreaded cold season, Iration’s five-song EP is reminiscent of the contrary. It’s warm sounds come together to create a mood like summer. Fresh Grounds EP is yet another great reggae release dropped by the Hawaiian natives. It was only two and a half years ago that Iration embarked on their first nationwide tour as a supporting act. Today, you can catch Iration performing nationwide tours as the headliners. The best part? They have continued to remain true to their fans by producing those same mellow vibes after gaining plenty of international recognition.

Fresh Grounds EP proves Iration’s talent to me, as if they hadn’t already with the release of Time Bomb in 2010. My favorite part of this release is the vocal variety. Kai Rediske and Micah Pueschel are two incredibly gifted vocalists. In Fresh Grounds they are the perfect complements to each other. There is not a single monotone moment for the duo. Kai shows off his vocal range the best in Work it Out, singing I need to let you know, Love can bloom in snow – only one of the many seasonal themes referenced throughout the EP. Doubling as the lead guitarist, Micah also sings about lost love in the acoustic track No Letter. He states I knew that no one did you better, wondering why it all had to end.

Instrumentally, Fresh Grounds is nothing less than stellar. Adam Taylor provides those deep bass lines that all reggae fans adore. If you listen to this on a decent system, you will realize his importance in leading some of the songs along and filling in the empty spots left by the electric guitar. In All This Time, Adam leads on the verses while the electric guitar plays some arpeggios and Cayson Peterson’s keys provide that lively offbeat rhythm. Finally, the synthesizer in the background ties it all together.

This EP by Iration is a must-have. Fresh Grounds, after its first week of being released, already climbed to #4 album on ITunes’s reggae charts! They kill it with this release, and it is only a handful of dollars. It’s a must a have!
